When the summer season arrives, it’s time to take out the patio furniture and get ready for outdoor entertaining. However, after the season is over, it can be a challenge to store cushions and other outdoor furniture accessories. To make the process easier, here are some smart strategies for patio furniture cushion storage.

Choose the Right Storage Containers

The right container can make all the difference in cushion storage. When choosing storage containers, be sure to look for sturdy, waterproof containers that will protect the cushions from moisture, dirt, and other outdoor elements. Plastic containers with lids are ideal for cushion storage, as they will protect the cushions from the elements and keep them free of dust and dirt. If you have a lot of cushions, you may want to invest in a large trunk or chest with handles for easy transport.

Label Everything

It’s important to label each container to make it easier to find the cushions when it’s time to use them. Use a permanent marker to label each container with the type of cushion it contains, as well as the name of the outdoor furniture it belongs to. You can also add other details such as the size or color of the cushions, if applicable.

Store Cushions in a Cool, Dry Place

When storing cushions, it’s important to choose a cool, dry place. The best place to store cushions is in a garage, shed, or basement, as these areas tend to be the most protected from the elements. If you don’t have access to a garage, shed, or basement, you can also store cushions in an interior closet or cupboard. Be sure to check the cushions periodically for signs of mildew or mold.

Clean Cushions Before Storing

Before storing cushions, it’s a good idea to clean them. To do this, simply use a mild detergent and a cloth to wipe down the cushions. Be sure to get into the nooks and crannies, as dirt and debris can accumulate in these areas. Once the cushions are clean, allow them to air dry before storing them in a container or trunk.

Use a Vacuum for Vacuum-Sealed Cushions

Some patio furniture cushions are vacuum-sealed for easy storage. To store vacuum-sealed cushions, use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air from the cushion. Once the air is removed, the cushion will shrink and become much smaller. This will make them easier to store in a small container or trunk.

Replace Cushions When Needed

Over time, cushions can become worn and faded. If your cushions are starting to look worse for wear, it may be time to replace them. To ensure that your new cushions last for many seasons, be sure to store them in a cool, dry place and use the strategies outlined above.
